Your Dog Was Built for Mantrailing

That nose isn't just cute. It's a supercomputer — and it's been waiting for a job.

Luke is a phenomenal mantrailing instructor. He always listens to your concerns and works hard to make sure your dog gets what they need from the next trail. My rescue pup Mayhem loves trailing with him!

Mantrailing: The Sport That Turns Your Dog's Greatest Strength Into Your Greatest Bond

A dog's sense of smell is at least 10,000 times more powerful than ours. That means when you smell pot roast, they smell carrots, potatoes, beef, onions, salt, pepper, garlic, and more.

Mantrailing is a nosework sport where your dog follows the unique trail of a specific person — through parks, across streets, through crowds — using nothing but their nose and their trust in you. It's not obedience. It's not agility. It's something different: a partnership where your dog gets to lead and you learn to follow.

It's one of the most mentally demanding, deeply satisfying activities you can do with your dog. And it's addictive.

Mantrailing helps even the most reactive dogs feel calm.

What You'll Learn

Beginners

No experience needed — for you or your dog. We start from the ground up! Every handler must take an introductory course. In it, you'll learn how odor and trailing work, plus how to:

  • Teach your dog to take scent
  • Handle a longline without getting tangled in it
  • Read your dog's body language
  • Facilitate communication between you and your dog through the longline
  • Build drive and enthusiasm for the work
  • Short, simple trails that build your dog's confidence and drive

At the end, you and your dog will run a very short trail to apply what you've learned.

Intermediate & Advanced Teams

Once your dog understands the game, we raise the difficulty:

  • Longer trails with more time elapsed between laying and running
  • Urban environments — sidewalks, parking lots, crowded areas
  • Cross-trails and distractions
  • Varying terrain and weather conditions
  • Level assessment preperation
  • Special outings just for advanced teams

Why Mantrailing?

I got into mantrailing because I've always loved the idea of being involved in search and rescue. However, I don't have the time to commit to the level of training a true SAR dog team needs. Mantrailing is a middle ground. It's taking the basic skills needed for a SAR K9 and giving pet dogs and their parents a chance to have some fun.

Mental exhaustion is real. A 20-minute trail tires a dog out more than an hour of fetch. If you have a high-drive dog who never seems satisfied, this changes things.

It builds a different kind of relationship. In obedience, you're asking your dog to listen to you. In mantrailing, you're learning to listen to your dog. Most people find that changes how they see their dog entirely.

We accept all dogs—even reactive ones.  There is only ever ONE dog on the trail at a time. We can adjust nearly anything to make it work for your dog.

Mantrailing can reduce reactivity. I've seen dogs who couldn't handle being out in public become the most well-balanced, calm under pressure creature you could imagine. It doesn't work for all dogs...but MOST dogs can benefit.

My Approach

Mantrailing is one of my favorite things to teach — and once you try it with your dog, I think you'll understand why.

It seems simple enough, your dog uses their nose to follow a person's scent trail. No prior training needed — just your dog doing what they were literally built to do. And watching them work never gets old.

I run my mantrailing program under Mantrailing Global, the world's sanctioning organization for the sport, so you know the training is structured, progressive, and built around how dogs learn. Whether your dog is bold outgoing or a little unsure of the world, mantrailing works. Plus, dogs run solo, which makes it a great fit for reactive or anxious dogs too.

Come give it a try. I think you're both going to love it.
